Microsoft To Develop Ubers Facial Recognition Software
Uber drivers in the US will be required to take a selfie before accepting a ride to make sure they are who they claim to be.
“Given that verification only takes a few seconds to complete, this feature proactively and efficiently builds more security into the app”
Joe Sullivan, Ubers Security Chief, Uber.com
The Real-Time ID check, which is in place to protect riders and drivers, requires drivers to take a “clear, well lit” photograph of them self when they first start their shift and continue periodically throughout their shift. The new app feature is also being put in place to protect drivers from fraud and to stop multiple people from sharing one account.
Microsoft has been appointed to help Uber develop the new app that gives a driver three attempts to take a verified photograph of them self before the profile is deactivated.
It is estimated that if the ID check is successful in the US, it will be introduced to UK Ubers next year.
